Fostering Healthy Connections

Our relationships with other people are incredibly important. While they can at times be frustrating, few things in our lives will help us to derive as much meaning as the meaning we find in developing meaningful relationships with those around us. Therefore, if you want to have a healthy internal balance in your life, it can be important to spend some time evaluating and caring for the relationships you have with those around you. These can be with family, friends, coworkers, or anyone else who is close to you. Whether you feel that you have great relationships, or you sometimes struggle to feel connected to those around you, here are a few things you can do to increase your connection to the important people in your life.

  1. Prune Unhealthy Relationships. While no relationship is perfect, you should take some time to reflect on some of the important relationships in your life and try to understand how they affect you. While it can be incredibly fulfilling to have strong relationships with family members or friends, sometimes the only thing you can do is to back off. Other people have the freedom to choose the way they act, and sometimes you will need to step back to ensure that you stay healthy.
  2. Take some time to ask questions. One of the best ways for you to evaluate your relationships with other people is to have a genuine discussion with them to understand how they feel about you. This may not be all good, but it can help you better understand how your actions are perceived. Often, individuals with good intentions end up causing hurt because they do not fully understand what they other person expects or wants in a relationship. Having a genuine heart to heart with the people you care about can help to alleviate hurt feelings and begin steps towards a relationship which is more mutually rewarding. Don’t be afraid to be assertive, but also recognize what others gain from your friendship.

As we take steps to make our connections with others healthier, we will begin to notice changes in other areas of our lives as well. If we can make ourselves healthy in one area, we will be better suited to deal with the challenges we face in other areas. When taking a holistic approach to your health, you will see that the hard things for you can become easier when you are in a stronger place overall.
