Self-Reliance

Self-reliance is a huge cultural goal. And there can be good reasons for this. At the end of the day, we are responsible for our own health, success, and happiness. However, there can also be some unhealthy attitudes associated with a fetishization of self-reliance which can be damaging.

While becoming self-reliant should be a goal, it is unrealistic to expect that we will instantly be able to be completely self-reliant. When we are having difficulties in our lives, or experiencing health problems, the best way to solve them is sometimes to look for help. Particularly, it can be wonderfully useful to get help which gives us the tools we need to become more independent in the future. For example, many holistic therapies will help us to develop skills which we can take with us forever.

Here are a few holistic tools you can use on a daily basis to help improve your life.

  1. Be Mindful. Taking some time to sit down and evaluate things can really add balance to your life. Taking some time to meditate and think about things daily is a great way to do this. Make it part of your daily routine, or train yourself to react to negative situations by calmly thinking about them, allowing you to respond once you have balanced your emotions and understand what you want.
  2. Care for the body is care for the whole individual. Exercise is a natural part of human health. The conditions we live in today are disconnected from the more physically demanding past, and our bodies do not have great systems in place to ensure health when we do not exercise. This is a great way to start your way, and can have both the long lasting health benefits we all know, and some shorter ones as well. Exercise can also help you sleep well, ensuring that your mind and body get the rest they need.
  3. Eat Well. A healthy diet is an integral part of keeping yourself in good condition. Your mind and body will not be functioning correctly if you do not sustain them with the energy and nutrients they need. Spend time to choose foods and ingredients which have a good balance of nutrients, and sourcing them form organic or ethical farms can help to promote a healthier society.

These are three simple things you can do every day which will help you to use holistic tools to become more healthy. Most importantly, they are all things you can do with little or no help. If you are confused, you can learn from an expert, but once you have the knowledge, you can take that forever.
