Holistic Responses to The Flu

Getting sick isn’t very fun. And unfortunately, there is sometimes nothing we can do to avoid it. Occasionally, even the healthiest people will come down with the cold. However, there are things you can do, both to decrease your chances of catching a cold, and helping yourself feel better and recover when you do end up getting one.

There are two things you can do to help yourself avoid catching a cold, and both of them align well with a holistic lifestyle. First, you can focus on keeping yourself healthy in general. If you can keep your body healthy, you can help to increase your chances of fighting off an infection before it catches hold of you. Eat well, exercise, and try to remove stress. Extra stress can help to suppress your immune system. Living a complete and healthy life can help you to better avoid complications and discomfort which come with sickness. So, the best time to focus on being healthy is before you are sick in the first place.

Second, you can avoid particularly busy and public areas during cold season. When illnesses are being passed around, take some time to get out of the crowds of people. Go take a walk, see some natural beauty, or just take some time for yourself away from the world.

If you do get sick though, you should still try to stay away from others. You can pass on the illness, so isolate yourself and get comfortable. One great thing to do is to take a relaxing and hot bath using essential oils to help clear your sinuses and lungs of mucus. Clearing your airways will always go a long way towards helping you feel better. Additionally, you can make yourself some healthy soup which can help to aid in relieving your discomfort. Things which are warm and comforting can help you to make the time bearable, if not comfortable. Additionally, foods like this can help you to stay hydrated during your illness.

No matter what happens, make sure that you stay optimistic. Illnesses often are accompanied with low amounts of energy and discouragement. Just remember that this will pass, and that you will soon be back to your normal self. If at all possible, take a day or two to relax, read a book, and allow your body the rest it needs to recover, while simultaneously preventing others from being exposed to your illness.
